Host a Plastic Free Morning Tea

plastic-free-july-square.png

Host a morning tea during July that aims to use no plastic.

Challenge yourself to investigate, observe and find alternatives to where plastic sneaks into the picture when entertaining.

Investigate and observe

  • Are you purchasing food and beverages in or making them yourself?
  • If purchasing them in, what packaging are they coming in?
  • If making them yourself, what packaging are the raw ingredients coming in?

Find alternatives

  • Can you choose items that have less packaging? Or don't come in plastic packaging?
  • Can you provide whole foods that come in their own wrapping such as fresh fruit?
  • If catered, can you choose one that uses sustainable packaging? Or request none?
  • If delivering yourself, can you use reusable covers or containers rather than clingfilm?
  • Could you provide milk and other beverages in glass bottles rather than plastic?
  • How far have your ingredients travelled? Can you source local ingredients or items?

Food waste

  • Did you know that food waste is also a problem? An estimated 40% of food produced for human consumption is wasted globally per year. When wasted food is landfilled, it breaks down in the absence of oxygen to produce methane. Methane is 86 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
  • How much food waste do you think your morning tea will produce?
  • What can you do to ensure there is minimal food waste and that food scraps don’t end up in a landfill bin?
