Plastic Free Homes

The issues and solutions of plastic around the home

This interactive and immersive display by the members of the Just One Thing Waitaki sustainability group looks at the issues of where plastic sneaks into our every-day life but also importantly focuses on the solutions and brings hope to how we can all do just one or two things to make a real difference.

Home-made crackers

Snacks are great! But so often come wrapped in multiple layers of plastic. Be inspired to make your own tasty and nutritious crackers and ditch the double plastic packaging.

Home-made cleaning products and cotton cloths

The convenience of cleaning products in single use plastic is hard to deny. But making your own and breaking up with the single use bottle is not only liberating, but fun and rewarding too. Come and be inspired to give it a go!

Grow your own microgreens using wool and recycled plastic trays

Say no to plastic wrapped produce. Learn how to grow your own micro-greens using wool discards and meat trays that might end up in the trash. Reuse, repurpose and eat well!

How to make beeswax wraps

Swapping from single use plastic film to reusable food wraps is easy, fun and colourful. Have a go making wraps to brighten up your food on the run.

How to make your own sour dough bread

From bread loaves to burger buns, doughnuts, crackers, wraps and everything in between - ditch all that plastic packaging and make your own baked goods using the sourdough method. Demo by Nia at 11am where there will be a limited number of free starters to give away to get you started on your sourdough journey!

How to make your own kombucha

Forget single use plastic pop bottles, brew your own Kombucha and add your favourite flavours. Demo by Nia at 1pm where there will be a limited number of kombucha scobies (starters) to give away to get you brewing!

Inspiration to host a Plastic Free Kids Party

Plastic Free Health and Parenting

Wānanga Ikura

Wānanga Ikura aims to provide a safe space to learn about te ao Māori understandings of our Ikura (menstrual cycle/s) and to raise awareness about the waste associated with menstrual products. Miriama from Para Kore will be on hand to chat about this, and there will be a separate workshop at 10:30am in a safe and secluded space for a deeper dive into this topic.

Wānanga Kope

Kope Toitū information wānanga is an opportunity to explore a te ao Māori perspective of using reusable nappies with your tamaiti. We aim to educate whānau about kope toitū, the benefits of using them for mokopuna and our taiao, and normalise their use. Miriama from Para Kore will be on hand to chat and there will be a separate workshop at 12:30 to do a deeper dive into this topic.

Waitaki Whitestone Geopark - a landscape that lends itself to natural fibres

Incredible forces formed our Geopark under an ancient sea. Volcanoes, mountains, rivers, glaciers, and people then further shaped this region. Written in the stone and in our land is the story of the Waitaki - a geological wonderland that produces world-class natural fibres. Learn about why we produce such amazing natural textile products from this unique land and be inspired to swap out synthetic for the softness and richness of local wool.

Sashiko mending and textile cordage making

Textile waste, and especially synthetic garments, are a growing and concerning waste problem and textile waste is really hard to recycle. Join Natalie from Waitaki Creative Wellbeing to have fun with Sashiko mending to give your garments longer life and learn how to recycle textile waste into useful resources to keep it out of landfill.

Have fun with visible mending

Be inspired to choose quality over quantity, and natural over synthetic and be bold with your mending!
