Public consultation on our 2025-34 Long Term Plan is open now until 4 March 2025. Find out what it's all about and how to get involved.
This exhibition introduces us to some of the Scottish migrants who came to call Waitaki home in the nineteenth century. At this time photographic technology made portraiture accessible to the masses. Previously, painted portraits had only been for the wealthy.
In 1878 the census recorded that 22% of Ōamaru residents had been born in Scotland. The bare details of each person’s biography give us a hint at the lives these people led, with personal triumphs and tragedies.
The North Otago Early Settlers’ Association and the Waitaki Archive have collected the photographs displayed here in the Vault Gallery and provided the biographical research.
