Waitaki Community Fire Performance
Te Ahi Ora are excited to present a wonderful evening of learning and performing. After working with students, staff, and parents from Oamaru Intermediate, Weston School, East Otago High School, and Ardgowan School, we bring everyone together for one big evening of fire performances and learning. This evening is provided free of charge, thanks to Creative New Zealand.
Fire & Flow is a new community activity that is rapidly spreading across the country. This exciting discipline engages the mind, connects with the body, and is incredibly fun and stimulating. The goal of Te Ahi Ora is to enhance the wellbeing of our participants, to give them a clear and engaging pathway forward.
After a safety briefing at 6 (dont be late!) our tutors will demonstrate the top levels of fire performance, and then teach kids and parents how to perform with fire in a safe and controlled context.
We follow rigid safety procedures in order to make this event as safe as possible. When done with the right controls in place, fire performance is just as safe as any modern sport (and even safer than some). After delivering this programme with kids and parents of all ages and abilities, we have had no injury more significant than a couple of bruises (and few of those).
You can do a few things to contribute to the safety of the evening:
- Please do not wear clothing made from synthetic fabrics. No polypro, onesies, tutus, skirts, etc. Denim, cotton, leather, are all great. If you or your child are dressed in onesies etc, you will not be allowed to spin fire. Also clothing may get small amounts of soot on it, so don't wear brand new or dear clothing.
- Please bring and wear masks for yourself and your children. This is just as much for smoke as for covid.
- If your child has long/fluffy hair, please bring a hair tie or beanie.
- If your child has not yet participated in our programme, please fill out the permission form.
- We recommend bringing warm jackets/blankets, foldout camping chairs, and water bottles.
You are welcome to take photos and videos, if you post them online please follow and tag us - @te.ahi.ora
