Sizzlin’ Sweet Swirl Soup

For Short Black owner Caidee Pennycook, her job is all about community

In the over four years she has been running her business, the regular customers and a loyal staff make everything more fun.

“People get to know you and about your life, and you are interested in people too. Like you can remember their coffee orders, or when you know it’s someone's birthday you will give them a free coffee or little things like that, that I think you probably don't get in a city,” she says.

Running her own cafe is something Caidee almost fell into by accident. She has grown up in the Waitaki, and always thought after finishing school that she would go to university.

“Then I kind of just got into hospitality, and haven't gone back.

“I like that it's everything - I can cook, I can bake, I do coffee, but it has the people side as well.”

Being able to retain her core staff of four makes Caidee’s life “less stressful” and “everyone helps everyone”.

She also enjoys supporting community causes, such as raising money for mental health or cancer charities.

“And it's nice to see, all our customers really get behind us when we do that . . . People are always like, ‘why are you raising funds for them?’ And I’m like, ‘why not?’.”
