Council and Heritage
We recognise that Council has a shared responsibility for protecting and enhancing Council owned heritage.
Council recognises that people looking after heritage places often need specialist advice – from building conservation specialists and architects, specialist engineering advice, or specialist tradespeople. On top of this, traditional materials can be more expensive or complicated to source.
In 2018, we appointed a Heritage Advisor to assist owners through Council processes and to help them access professional advice and funding. You can contact our Heritage Advisor on heritage@waitaki.govt.nz.
We are also proud of our Council-owned heritage. Major projects include:
- The Oamaru Opera House Restoration
- Forrester Gallery Restoration
- North Otago Museum and Waitaki District Archives
