Waitaki Heritage
The Waitaki District is rich in heritage. Our heritage ranges from wahi tupuna dating from as early as fourteenth century that show how iwi lived on the whenua, to rock art that marks the ways people moved through the district and left their marks on limestone outcrops, to nineteenth and twentieth century architectural heritage.
One way of recognising how the Waitaki District’s heritage is to list places on the Heritage Appendix of the District Plan. There are close to three hundred places listed or proposed for listing in the appendix.
Heritage New Zealand’s List
Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga (HNZ) looks after The New Zealand Heritage List/Rārangi Kōrero. The List identifies New Zealand’s significant historical and cultural heritage places. You can access the List here.
When changes that require a resource consent are proposed to a heritage place that is listed with HNZ and is on the Council’s heritage schedule of the district plan, Council has to consult with HNZ so HNZ can advocate for the heritage values of a place.
Council has to notify HNZ if they receive a building consent application for a property on the List. That a property is included on the list is recorded in any relevant land information memorandum (LIM).
