Aurora Australis – The Phoenix Rises
Ōamaru-based stargazer and astrophotographer Damien McNamara will be sharing fascinating insights into the recent solar/aurora activity that lit our skies and subsequently hijacked internet sites around the world. Damien will talk about how this relates to previous events that have been observed, with comparisons to the local activity seen in 1989 and 2001. The May aurora was unusual, occurring at a time we wouldn’t usually expect, nor close to either equinox. What might that mean as we head toward ‘solar max’?
