Council officers recently investigated a case of illegal dumping on Mount Trotter Road near Palmerston. We have since identified the offender who has been issued with a $400 fine for depositing dangerous litter as the rubbish included bottles and broken glass. $400 is the maximum infringement fee that can be issued under the Litter Act 1979.
This is the second time in recent months Council has identified people who have illegally dumped rubbish. Late last year, a member of the public witnessed illegal dumping at Kakanui Beach Road Reserve. They took the offender’s vehicle registration number and passed it on to us, resulting in a fine being issued.
Waitaki District Council Senior Compliance Officer Tristan Hope said "The key message here is that members of the community are vigilant against illegal dumping and that Council contractors and officers actively gather evidence to identify offenders. Council has a zero- tolerance approach towards this behaviour."
