Leading earthquake scientists and Emergency Management Otago are partnering again to bring the award-winning AF8 Roadshow to 3 communities around the region starting next month.

The "AF8 Roadshow: The Science Beneath Our Feet", sponsored by Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake (NHC), will tour the South Island for its fourth time from April to May 2025, visiting more that 20 communities to share world-leading science with local communities.

The AF8 Roadshow aims to share the Alpine Fault hazard science with communities to improve understanding of the hazard risk and enable conversations on how to be better prepared. This year Emergency Management Otago are hosting 3 public talks and 3 school sessions, visiting Queenstown, Alexandra and Ōmarama.

Dates, venues and timings are on the Emergency Management Otago Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/OtagoCDEM/events

Dr. Tom Robinson, AF8 Science Lead (University of Canterbury) “The fact that we are on our fourth tour is testament to the support and interest in the science from our communities. While we can’t predict when the next large Alpine Fault earthquake will happen, we know it will cause severe disruption and pose a major challenge for the nation. The AF8 Roadshow plays a critical role in supporting our communities to make informed decisions and to understand and prepare for this inevitable earthquake.”

NHC Public Education Manager Hamish Armstrong says “Research indicates there is a 75% probability of an Alpine Fault earthquake occurring in the next 50 years, which would impact the entire South Island and beyond. It’s so important that we’re well-informed about what those impacts could look like for our homes and families - and that people know there’s a lot we can all be doing to be well prepared."

"Otago residents are great at coming together during emergency events to support each other. The AF8 Roadshow is a place for communities to come together beforehand, to learn about local hazard risk and understand how to better prepared. Everyone is welcome, and we encourage you to bring your questions." said Matt Alley, EMO Group Manager.

The AF8 Roadshow is part of an ongoing series of activities led by the 6 South Island Emergency Management Groups. It is designed to support conversations and knowledge sharing around large natural hazard events like an Alpine Fault earthquake, ensuring that communities and agencies are collectively better prepared.

The complete itinerary of all events on this year’s tour is available on the AF8 website: https://af8.org.nz/explore-the-science/af8-roadshow

The AF8 Roadshow events are hosted by the six South Island CDEM Groups and supported by world-leading earthquake research and science experts from Resilience to Nature's Challenges, QuakeCoRE, GNS Science, University of Otago, University of Canterbury, and the University of Auckland
