It was decided at a Council Meeting, held on 27 June 2023, to continue offering limited free parking in the Ōamaru CBD through the winter months, but reduce it from 2 hours free parking to 1 hour, and increase the hourly fee by an average of $1 per hour after the free parking period runs out.

All changes will come into effect from 1 July 2023.

One hour of free parking per customer per day will be offered between the hours of 10.00am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday and 10am to 1pm on Saturdays. Outside these hours there is no charge for parking.

Council agreed to:

  • Increase the parking fee by an average of $1 per hour, meaning that the parking fees will be consistent across town: Ōamaru CBD on-street and off-street paid parking will increase to $2.00 per hour.
  • Ōamaru off-street all-day-parking will be capped at $8.00 per day.

Council staff will be updating parking signage around the CBD to reflect these new fees. Parking machines will also be updated as well as tariffs on the PayMyPark app.

Parking Permits have also changed in price:

  • Annual Parking Permits will increase from $400 per year to $600 per year
  • 6 month Parking Permits will increase from $220 to $330 for 6 months
  • 3 month Parking Permits will increase from $120 to $180 per quarter

It is intended that the one hour free parking will cease from 1 October 2023 in the anticipation that a further review of Ōamaru CBD parking will be completed by that time.

Mayor for Waitaki Gary Kircher said, “We’ve got parking machines that are wearing out and a decision will need to be made on whether these are going to be replaced. Our parking review will need to balance the cost of the revenue raised by parking and the impact on shoppers and businesses in the CBD. We look forward to trying to make sure we have a system that works well for the public and for the business owners alike, that ensures that there’s a good turnover and accessibility of parking spots, and that the activity covers its own costs.”
