Waitaki District Council has awarded the contract for a sewer main and leachate collection tank to be installed at Falcon Street Palmerston to local business, Skevingtons.

Project Manager Steve Clarke said, “We received four high quality quotes however Skevingtons methodology stood out along with an innovative approach to completing the works, which gave them a competitive advantage.”

The purpose of the works is to improve the environmental management at the Palmerston Landfill. This will also help prepare the Palmerston Landfill, which is accessed via Falcon Street, to receive the waste from two fly tipping (illegal) dumping sites on Beach Road and the closed Hampden Landfill as part of Project Reclaim.

The brief includes installing a sewer main from the Palmerston Landfill, down Falcon Street and connect into the WDC sewer main on Tiverton Street. The origin of the sewer main will be a 10,000L collection tank located inside the Palmerston Landfill. The installation of the Leachate collection tank and control valve is also to be part of the works.

Leachate is defined as any contaminated liquid that is generated from water running through a solid waste disposal site, accumulating contaminants, and moving into subsurface areas. At Palmerston Landfill, the leachate is currently discharged into a settling pond and is managed by way of evaporation. The works will capture this leachate and discharge it to the sewer where it will be processed.

Waitaki District Council Chief Executive Alex Parmley said, “This is a positive outcome for a Palmerston. The contract will see measures to protect the local environment all undertaken by a local based company and supporting Project Reclaim. It is great that we have a local company able to compete and undertake this work so we can keep the spending locally. Skevingtons has a good reputation for quality work, and Council looks forward to working with the team.”

Skevingtons Managing Director, Blair (Chezze) Skevington said, “We are operating all over the South Island but are thrilled to have our first contract with Waitaki District Council and look forward to working on this local project.”

Waitaki District Mayor, Gary Kircher said, ““I am very pleased to hear that Skevington’s have been successful in this tender process. Chezze and his team do great work and it’s particularly special to be able to award a tender for a local company that supports the community in a range of different ways!”

The quotation period was from Friday 24 February 2023 to Wednesday 22 March 2023. Skevingtons pricing overall was the most cost-effective option. This coupled with the detailed methodology and attention to residents’ access during the works made Skevingtons the successful bidder.

Skevington Contracting Limited trading as Skevingtons is a multidisciplinary family-owned and operated company established in 2004, undertaking projects South Island wide. The contract with Skevingtons commences on Monday 17 April 2023 and is due to be complete by Friday 21 July 2023. The tender for the remediation works closed on Friday 14 April 2023 and the successful tenderer will be announced after due process.
