The consultation document for the 2025 – 34 Long-Term Plan will be considered by the Mayor and Councillors next week. The Long Term Plan sets out the priorities and budgets for the Council over the next nine years. In the consultation the Council is asking the community for its views on a range of big decisions it needs to make in setting its budget.
In 2024, Waitaki District Council produced an Enhanced Annual Plan for the 2024-25 year. This option was offered by the Government to allow them more time to implement their legislative agenda; particularly around the future of water services, and their National Land Transport Programme for the next three years.
Consultation topics include the future of Water Services for the Waitaki District as part of developing a Water Services Plan for the September 2025 deadline. The future of coastal assets like the Orwell Street Sewer Pump station and Beach Road, and the cost of protecting them also feature.
Also considered is creating an Economic Development Agency for Waitaki, the potential sale of Council owned commercial properties, the future of Community Halls, a review of Council’s Community Housing, the potential for an AirBNB levy on properties and changes to Council’s fees and charges for the 2025-26 year.
Projects for the next nine years are also laid out, and the community will have the opportunity to submit on these and suggest their own projects in the consultation period beginning in February.
The proposed average rate rise for Waitaki currently sits at 11.18%, although this may change as Councillors consider submissions and feedback on the Long-Term Plan before its adoption in June 2025.
