Get Lost in Our Landscape
Published on 28 October 2022
We are gearing up for summer at the Forrester Gallery, with our latest exhibitions encouraging visitors to immerse themselves in the landscape through a collection of works by local, regional and national artists.
The Gallery will open four new exhibitions on Saturday 28 October 2022 – Rare and Unrivalled Beauty: Landscape Paintings from the Kelliher Art Trust Collection; Not Far Away by Kit Macgregor and Alison Bevers; Finding Lyalldale by Deirdre T Lavery and Scottish Faces.
We are excited to be hosting a South Island touring exhibition from the Kelliher Art Trust over the summer months. Rare and Unrivalled Beauty was curated by the Kelliher Art Trust Curator, Christopher Johnston, for a selection of South Island venues and includes Kelliher prize winners, subsequent purchases, and recent commissions by the Trust. The exhibition features works by renowned New Zealand artists, including Austen Deans, Colin Wheeler, Douglas Badcock, Dick Frizzell, and Michael Smither.
On Saturday 28 October Kelliher Curator, Christopher Johnston, will be giving a talk about the exhibition 10.30am at the Forrester Gallery.
Continuing with our landscape theme, Waitaki artists Alison Bevers and Kit Macgregor have created an exhibition of mixed media works and oil paintings of Ōamaru and the Waitaki District, all places Not Far Away. Kit’s work looks at the region and land use, while Alison focuses on often overlooked buildings and vistas.
Kit and Alison will be having a ‘Meet the Artists’ afternoon in November where you can come along and have a casual chat with them about their exhibition, work, and art practices. This will be held at Forrester Gallery on Saturday 26 November from 2-3.30pm.
Our final landscape show is by St Andrew’s artist Deirdre T Lavery who is having her Forrester Gallery debut in the Community Gallery with Finding Lyalldale. Sharing with our visitors her enjoyment of her new surroundings at Lyalldale through her watercolours and poems. And our fourth and final new exhibition is Scottish Faces, an exhibition created by the North Otago Early Settlers’ Association with the Gallery, showcasing photographic portraits of Scottish Migrants. On display to help celebrate Victorian Heritage Week.
There is plenty to see and wonderful places to visit in all these exhibitions, the quality of the work from our four artists is exceptional and shouldn’t be missed. Rare and Unrivalled Beauty: Landscape Paintings from the Kelliher Art Trust Collection and Not Far Away are on display until 22 January 2023, Finding Lyalldale and Scottish Faces are on display until 4 December 2022.
