Waitaki Lakes - Lake Benmore

With the Waitaki Lakes campgrounds opening on Saturday 21 September, Waitaki District Council is reminding all potential campers of five things they should know before heading up the valley.

  • No ticket, no entry! It seems obvious, but you do need a ticket to get in. Full season tickets can be purchased from Council’s office in Oamaru, Kurow Autos and Otematata On the Spot. Other ways to pay, and the application form, can be found here: Waitaki Lakes camping. Boat Harbour Campground tickets are purchased on arrival from the Camp Supervisor.
  • First come, first served. There are some rules about camp-site sizes, especially about not spreading larger than 60m². However, it is first-come, first served. If you’ve got a spot in mind, be prepared for this weekend.
  • Parking up Friday? Loch Laird top paddock, not on the road. So you’ve got your ticket, you’re packed up, and you want to be there early. Make sure you park up at Loch Laird’s top paddock, and not on the road. Don’t start your summer off by getting a ticket or a ticking off.
  • Don’t be a silly goose! There’s lots of ways to be a good neighbour at our campsites. Keep the noise down between 10pm and 7am, leave the trailbike at home, keep your dog on a lead, slow down when driving in the campsite and keep fire on the camp-stove. Got a problem? Contact the camp supervisor.
  • Enjoy yourself. Our lakes are an absolute wonder, a place for the whole family to relax and have fun over the summer. Be a good neighbour, enjoy the serenity, and have a great time.
