Work on the Marketzone and Carpark by the Scotts Brewery will near completion this week with the Oamaru Farmers Market taking up residence in their new home from Sunday 15 December.
The project has seen the installation of a dedicated market zone for the Farmers Market, an upgrade to the Tyne Street entrance to the car-park, new footpaths linking Waterfront Road to Wansbeck Street, as well as a full resurfacing, the installation of drainage and new car-park markings. Native planting and landscaping will also border the site along Waterfront Road, Tyne Street and Wansbeck. Cycle and motorbike parking will also be available on site.
The project was scaled earlier this year to cover the Marketzone and Tyne Street side of the car-park around the Scotts Brewery to suit the budget available, and complete another part of the Harbour Masterplan which has been in operation since 2020.
Waitaki District Mayor Gary Kircher says, “We are giving our vibrant farmers market a more permanent, and purpose-designed home as well as creating a space which can be used throughout the rest of the week for people to relax in, for events and for other activities. The resurfacing the carpark and marking provides a much tidier and efficient use of the space for locals and visitors to enjoy our beautiful harbour and all that it has to offer. Stage 2 will see the completion of the carpark area and I look forward to that proceeding in due course.”
Council would like to thank Rooneys Earthmoving and Creo for their hard work producing this wonderful public space.
