Upgrades to the Ōamaru Harbour continue with the footpath on Waterfront Road between McKeown Group and the intersection with The Esplanade due to commence in May.

Project Manager, Erik van der Spek said “The Ōamaru Harbour area is enjoyed by those who both live in or visit the district. This is an important area to make safer and more accessible to all visitors.”

This is the second Ōamaru Harbour Plan footpath connection with the first between Scott’s Brewery and The Galley constructed in July / August 2022 which has been serving as an important pedestrian pathway and connecting to the recently renovated Holmes Wharf.

Work on the new footpath is planned to commence in May with Whitestone Contracting to complete the work. The timeline of the work is subject to weather and any other priority work required by Council.

The works are not expected to impact the local wildlife as the path is in the open and largely adjacent to existing infrastructure such as roads and rail.

A new raised crossing will also be installed to slow down traffic turning into The Esplanade.

Assets Operations Manager, Joshua Rendell said, “The Ōamaru Harbour area is really taking shape and is being enjoyed by many. This area is used quite a lot by walkers and cyclists, construction of the new footpath away from the roadside will assist in making this area safer for all.”

There may be limited impact on traffic during these works however traffic management will be in place to protect worker safety.

Last year’s footpath installation and this new work will be constructed within a budget of $180,000 that Council approved as part of the 2021-31 Long Term Plan.
