Pre-Election Report 2022

On 8 October 2022, you will have the opportunity to shape the future of your community, your district, and your Council. Waitaki District Council Chief Executive Alex Parmley has prepared the 44-page Pre-Election Report independently from the Mayor and Councillors.
Nominations to stand for election now open (Friday 15th July) and close at 12 noon on Friday 12th August. We also welcome those thinking about standing to come to the Candidate Information Evening - Monday 18th July at 5.30pm at the Ōamaru Opera House.
The aim of the Pre-Election Report is to inform both voters and candidates to know what is planned for Waitaki, some of the key issues, challenges we face and the opportunities for the Waitaki District.
The seven issues included in the report are:
Waitaki is ageing
We have a housing issue
Securing people and skills our district needs
Rising costs and affordability
Covid
Environment and climate change
Government reforms
The Pre-Election Report provides detailed, politically neutral information regarding each issue.
Waitaki has 4 wards: Ahuriri Ward & Community Board, Corriedale Ward, Waihemo Ward & Community Board and Ōamaru Ward. Councillors will be elected from their respective wards; they also have an obligation and duty to represent the interests of the district as a whole.
“It will be a challenging term ahead for every one of our Elected Members. There will be decisions to be made by Council that will have major impacts across our community”. Said Alex Parmley.
The report also covers our Governance structure, strategic framework, projects, financial performance, and an overview of what the Council does. This includes community wellbeing and development, public health and safety, reserves, recreation, libraries and culture, resource management, infrastructure (Three waters, solid waste, roads).
