As the Waitaki District marks Remembrance Day on Monday 11 November, our parks contractor Green By Nature has added four painted poppies to grassed surfaces in Ōamaru.

The poppies, which will be located at the Oamaru New Cemetery, the War Memorial on Thames Street and at the RSA Garden of Memories, have been provided free of charge by the contractor to mark the 105th commemoration of Armistice Day, which took place on 11 November 1918 to end the First World War.

This year’s Remembrance Day service is being hosted by the Oamaru RSA, and the service will take place from 10:45 am on Monday 11 November at the RSA Garden of Memories. The Oamaru RSA has requested attendees bring or wear rosemary sprigs, a traditional plant of memory, and will have some available on the day.

Waitaki District Mayor Gary Kircher says: “Council appreciates Barry Gamble of the Oamaru RSA for organising this year’s ceremony, along with all of the other work he does to respect the sacrifices of our service men and women.

We also thank Green by Nature for their very thoughtful gesture towards remembrance of the casualties of the First World War and all subsequent conflicts.”
