While Ardgowan School students won’t want to think about the next school year just yet, they will all have a safer route upon returning to learning in 2024.
Waitaki District Council has awarded the contract for the shared path connecting the school with Eden Street to local construction firm Specialised Services Group, to construct the route to create a safer walking and cycling option for the school community.
Work is planned to begin on January 8 and should be complete by the end of the month (weather permitting), just in time for the new school year.
Waitaki District Council had piloted its Community Conversations with the Year 7 and 8’s at the school in November, and the subject of safer walking and cycling routes had been one of the important issues the students had raised at the time.
Mayor Gary Kircher says: “It’s fantastic to be able to connect Ardgowan School up with Eden Street. It’s been a long-term aim of the school community to have a safer walking and cycling route, and we’re pleased to be able to provide it for them.”
Principal Ryan Fraser says: “This is a really exciting project not just for the school but for the community, I am sure it will get a lot of use and to have it ready for the beginning of the 2024 school year is awesome.”
