Work will begin on removing around 1,045mᶾ of silt from the Top Pond, or around 1/3 of the silt in the pond, in the Oamaru Public Gardens next week. This week the pond has begun to be drained, revealing silt of depths up to 1.4 meters.

Contractors Aviemore Irrigation have completed the filling of the Mirror Pond, following the extraction of around 1,354mᶾ earlier this month. It will take a while for the fine sediment to settle.

Eel and fish relocation from Top Pond to the Mirror Pond is ongoing as water levels drop, and that will include those eels and fish recently moved in the opposite direction.

Aviemore Irrigation, supported by Road Metals, and J.R Civil will be working on the Top Pond and be redirecting cyclists and walkers via an alternative route through the gardens while this work progresses.

Mark Burgher, Project Manager says: “Our contractors have made good progress so far. We retained the lilies in the Mirror Pond, and will be keeping the islands in the Top Pond to support our local duck population.

Excavations so far has not revealed anything unexpected in the pond, although if the owner of the orange road cone discovered in the Mirror Pond would like to claim it, they can contact Waitaki District Council.”

Work is anticipated to continue until the end of April.
