The Oamaru community is seeing positive results two months after the adoption of the new Dog Control Bylaw which includes the trial allowing dogs on-lead in Thames St and Harbour St.
The initiative has been well-received, with many dogs and their owners enjoying the new regulations. Animal Management staff have reported only one complaint of a dog being offlead. The owner was promptly reminded of the need to keep their dog on-lead, ensuring continued compliance with the bylaw.
However, there have been six additional dog-related attacks since January 7th, prompting the stern enforcement approach from Animal Management staff.
To date, three infringements have been issued:
• One individual was fined for having their dog off-lead on Waterfront Rd, despite previous warnings and infringements.
• Another person received two infringements for their dog being off-lead and for failing to pick up their dog’s droppings on Weston Road.
• Animal Management staff have also seized two dogs with the assistance of police, for worrying stock and wandering in the North end.
Animal Management staff will continue to enforce the bylaw to ensure responsible pet ownership and the safety of the community. We appreciate the cooperation of dog owners in adhering to these regulations and encourage everyone to continue following the rules to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for all.
A consultation page will open on Let’s Talk Dogs later in February to allow the community to submit feedback on the trialled changes.
