Drinking water is a fundamental human need and the supply of clean, safe water to the community is a top priority for Council.
Council owns and operates several treated drinking water supplies around the Waitaki District - you can find more information about these supplies by visiting water supply page. We also own and operate some untreated drinking water supplies - you can find out more about them below.
Although Council is responsible for supplying much of the Waitaki community with drinking water, there are several other small supplies which are privately owned and operated.
This page provides some important information you should be aware of if you are on a private supply or an untreated Council supply. There is also some useful information for private supply operators.
There are some privately owned and operated water supplies in Waitaki. If a boil water notice is required, these are issued by the supply operators, not by Council.
Council makes it a priority to make drinking water to meet Standards. Untreated water supplies are put on interim /permanent boil water notices until they are upgrade.
Although the Waitaki District Council doesn’t operate water supplies that are under private management, it monitors these suppliers on behalf of the community for any contamination.
Operating a privately owned community-based water supply requires operator to have the Drinking Water Standards for New Zealand and the Drinking Water Amendment Act 1956.
