Public consultation on our 2025-34 Long Term Plan is open now until 4 March 2025. Find out what it's all about and how to get involved.
When you wish to build or use your land in a way that does not comply with the rules of the Waitaki District Plan you need to get special permission, in the form of a resource consent. The Resource Management Act 1991 deals with the inclusion, change or cancellation and review of resource consent conditions. It is the main law controlling the use of land, soil, water and air, as well as subdivision and noise.
The Waitaki District Plan contains the policies and rules to the use of land in the area.
Any development, subdivision or other use of land must be assessed against the District Plan. If your project could impact on the environment or people, you may require a resource consent.
Any work that may affect an archaeological site needs to be authorised by Heritage New Zealand.
The Fast-track Approvals Bill provides a streamlined process for obtaining approvals under multiple Acts, not just resource consents under the Resource Management Act 1991.
The Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) manages natural and physical resources in New Zealand. Find RMA guide books below to know more.
Resource consent application forms can be downloaded from this page and are also available for collection at the Council offices.
Notified resource consent applications can be Publicly notified applications or Limited notified applications, these documents can be downloaded below.
