Waste minimisation starts long before recycling. Waste minimisation starts with aligning our actions towards the top of the waste hierarchy by reducing the amount of waste we produce and refusing items that create waste.
How can you embrace waste minimisation? Use the waste hierarchy to inform your decisions. Rethink what you buy in the first place. Reuse items where you possibly can. Get organics out of landfill by composting at home if you can or partner with someone who can do it for you. Stay up to date with what you can recycle and build systems to make it easy to separate waste and recycle it. Make sure all recycling is clean so it doesn’t end up in landfill.
The Waitaki District Council is focused on promoting and supporting waste minimisation in Waitaki.

In 2023 we conducted a waste assessment, leading to the decision to replace the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan 2018-2024. Our new plan takes a future-focussed lens and has a vision of “Waste Free Waitaki: where our resources are valued, our environment protected and our people thrive”.
