Work to begin on Public Gardens Mirror Pond silt removal

On Monday 24 February 2025, work will begin on removing silt from the Oamaru Public Gardens Mirror Pond.

This work is anticipated to take around eight weeks, and will involve relocating fish and eels into the Top Pond before the Mirror Pond is drained down.

This is the first desilting of this pond since Waitaki District Council was formed in 1989, and Council has no record of it having happened

$15.6 million dollar question for Council

At next weeks meeting of the Waitaki District Council, the Mayor and
Councillors will consider how best to use the $15.6 million dollars returned to Council from Observatory Village in January.

With the Thames Street Public Space trial open from Wednesday 19 February until the end of March 2025, recognition should be given to all of those involved in the project.

The Community Led Project, part of the Central Ōamaru Masterplan and CBD Revitalisation, used Government Better Off Funding to deliver a long-discussed but never tried expansion of pedestrian space in Lower Thames Street.

Update on the trial Dog By Law for Waitaki District

The Oamaru community is seeing positive results two months after the adoption of the new Dog Control Bylaw which includes the trial allowing dogs on-lead in Thames St and Harbour St. The initiative has been well-received, with many dogs and their owners enjoying the new regulations.

Councils to Consider Collaborating on Water Services Delivery Options

Four southern district councils are considering working together to investigate options for ensuring the efficient and sustainable delivery of water services to their communities.

Gore District Council, Clutha District Council, Central Otago District Council, and Waitaki District Council will discuss signing an agreement to formalise their relationship at meetings over the next few weeks.
